Funding opportunities

Our research grants are available to UK-based researchers through open, national competition in our annual calls. We offer two types of funding: project grants and post-doctoral fellowships (new in 2024). We no longer offer PhD studentships, other than to those with a medical degree, who may apply through the post-doctoral fellowship scheme.

Through both schemes, our funds are currently restricted to research addressing the fundamental mechanisms and therapy of:

Headache and facial pain

Primary tumours of the brain and spinal cord

Acquired brain and spinal cord injury

Project grants

Brain Research UK project grants provide funding of up to £300,000 for translational research projects under the three priority themes outlined above. We particularly encourage applications from early career researchers, and applications for collaborative projects.

Our 2024 project grant round is now open for applications, with a deadline of midday on 10th January 2024 for preliminary applications. Log in to access this scheme.

Post-doctoral fellowships

Our new post-doctoral fellowship scheme will launch in Spring 2024, with a September deadline. This scheme will provide salary funding and research costs for post-doctoral candidates working towards independence, as well as prospective clinical academic PhD students.

Our first call for fellowship applications will be issued in Spring 2024, with a September deadline and awards expected to be made in February 2025.
